Body Wraps: What You Need to Know

Beauty experts have long touted the benefits of body wraps. This versatile spa treatment claims to reduce cellulite, detox the body, moisturize the skin — and in some cases — help you shed inches off your waistline. While no two wraps are the same, each treatment follows a similar procedure.

Consultation

Dont strip down just yet! Before heading into the treatment room most spas will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire. There is a body wrap to remedy every problem, from weight loss and body contouring to cellulite and skin tightening. During the consultation, the esthetician may ask if you have sensitive skin, allergies, or similar conditions that could affect your results.

Preparation

How you prepare for your treatment is nearly as important as the body wrap itself. Arrive at your appointment freshly bathed and free of lotions, perfumes, and body sprays. During treatment, you’re welcome to wear a bikini or pair of bikini-style panties and bra.

Exfoliation

While not included in all types of body wraps, exfoliation is a beneficial component of most wraps. Exfoliation encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells from the body through a process known as dry brushing. In some instances, a gentle abrasive body scrub may be used. The skin is then thoroughly rinsed.

Wrapping

This next step is what most people think of when they hear the words ‘body wrap.’ The esthetician will apply a mineral-based or oil-rich formula to the skin for hydration. Each area of the body is then wrapped in plastic film or cloth to trap body heat and induce the body’s natural cleansing process. Heated towels may be placed on your body to promote sweating and the opening of pores. This allows the formula to seep into your skin.

Relaxation

Here’s the fun part of a body wrap. Just lie back, relax, and let the wrap do its magic. You’ll remain warm and comfortable while covered with a blanket. If you’re up for it, schedule a scalp massage or facial to be performed during this relaxation period.

Removal

The final step of a body wrap is the unwrapping. The plastic or cloth wrap material will be removed from the skin and you’ll have the opportunity to rinse off your body. Avoid the use of shower gels or harsh soaps while rinsing to avoid stripping your skin of healthy oils. As a final step, the esthetician may apply a moisturizer to soften your skin.

Over time, your body will “re-toxify”, making a body wrap a temporary treatment. However, undergoing regular body wraps while adopting a healthier lifestyle can help you achieve long-lasting results.
